Slovakia GHIC and healthcare for post-Brexit travel
When the UK left the European Union at the end of 2020, it fundamentally changed the way that trade and travel worked for UK citizens visiting all parts of the EU, including Slovakia.
Following negotiations, it was resolved that UK residents would retain the right to access emergency healthcare from the state-owned healthcare system in any EU destination. However, the existing European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) system was overhauled, and in 2021 a new system was introduced which means that a Slovakia UK Global Health Insurance Card is now a necessity when you’re planning your next holiday to this lovely location.
Why do I need a Slovakia UK GHIC Card?
No matter how careful you are whilst you’re on holiday, accidents can happen to anyone. Luckily, Slovakia has a great healthcare system, but in order to receive emergency care without incurring cost, you’ll have to prove your residency. That is where the Slovakia GHIC card comes in to play. This one simple card helps to prove your status, and your eligibility to receive the necessary healthcare if you are taken ill, or have an accident.
Types of healthcare covered by a Slovakia UK Global Health Insurance Card
The Slovakia Health Insurance Card is specifically designed to help people visiting Slovakia to access emergency healthcare. That includes things like trips to A&E, or even emergency surgery or hospital stays if you are involved in an accident, or taken ill. It will also cover you if you are taken ill on your way to your final destination. So if you are thinking of jetting off for a city break, or a family holiday in Slovakia – a Slovakia GHIC card will help you show your eligibility for treatment, even if you become ill whilst on the plane over!
In some cases, treatment for on-going healthcare needs and chronic conditions can also be covered by a Slovakia GHIC, but the scheme is not intended to cover people who travel to Slovakia specifically for the purpose of seeking medical treatment. Both emergency and some routine maternity medical treatment can be accessed in Slovakia thanks to the Slovakia GHIC card or Luxembourg GHIC card, although it doesn’t automatically grant the right for an expectant mother to travel to the country with the specific intention of giving birth there.
The Slovakia UK GHIC card and insurance
Whilst it’s crucial to sort yourself out with a Slovakia GHIC card before you travel to this amazing holiday hotspot, you should also remember to arrange any necessary insurance. It’s important to bear in mind that some aspects of the healthcare system, like air ambulances and mountain rescue, are typically private enterprises. This is important to bear in mind, especially for winter sports like skiing. If you are involved in an accident and need recovery from the mountain-side, it’s likely that you’ll need a level of winter sports coverage within your insurance. So whether you are scrambling on Stanisovska jaskyna, or enjoying the hikes around the Zelené pleso – make sure you’ve got the necessary cover in place.
Of course, holiday insurance is also a great way to protect yourself from other problems, like lost luggage, pickpockets, or hotel failures. So, whilst the Slovakia GHIC or Malta GHIC card is an important part of your travel planning, holding a Slovakia UK GHIC card is not a substitute for having reliable holiday insurance, the two things should be treated as complementary!
